I don't think the slow idle switch will get you where you want to be. I have a 38 open with 480CE Cummins and with both engines in gear I am over 5 mph at the normal 600 rpm idle. Faster then you can run in most canals. The slow idle switch drops the idle speed by 50 rpm to 550 rpm. Even when I do that with one engine in gear I am still over 2 mph throwing a small wake at the point. I would be surprised if the 42 with that power would be able to get under 4 mph with trolling valves. You could always have the sales representative prove what he is saying is true.
Sorry, I meant to say that I would be surprised if you could "get under 4 mph WITHOUT trolling" valves in my last post
Agree with above... We have 715HP Cat's in our 42. Low idle (550rpm) the boat makes around 6kts. High idle at 700rpm we're making closer to 8kts and a wake. Even in low on 1 engine (24 degrees of rudder to compensate), we're still making 4 kts.

Alot of the big boats down here on Lake Erie run trolling bags to get down to walleye speeds (2 mph). While trolling valves are the way to go, you might want to look into a pair in the short term. That and deploying your trim tabs all the way will shave a little off your speed as well. Good Luck.

thanks misdirection.....
i heard that even with trolling bags deployed that you cant get it down to 2mph ???? i use trolling bags now and have no issue with them, i was told by another captain that trolling valves are a MUST, if you expect to get down to 2mph>??i would love to use trolling bags, way cheaper than valves.....

I have a 2008 42open with the same cummins and my slowest speed on low idle with two engines is 6, with one in gear, it's 4. I can only go two if I forget to untie from the dock!
