HI---Just bought a 3100 Open in the Old Saybrook area of Connecticut. Can anyone suggest a really good surveyor in the area familiar with Tiaras? The boat has gas engines which will need to be surveyed as well. I've been told that many surveyors are qualified to check out gas---but not diesel---engines?  If you know someone or someones, I'd be grateful for the lead.

Can't help you with a surveyor in CT, but you're going to love your 31.  We've had ours for five seasons, and can say without a doubt it is the best boat in its class, and well suited to New England.  Gas engines are perfect for this size and if well maintained will give you solid service.  Welcome!!

[Misdirection]

Things may be different up in the NE, but over here on the great lakes, surveyors aren't mechanics and don't provide a report on the condition of the engines. You typically need to hire a marine mechanic for those.

As in any profession---not everyone is equal---some are better than others

Do you suggest anyone? Or suggest any specific set of qualifications to help winnow through the list?

If there on that list
They should be better then decent.
Many also hold masters lisc.
Don’t be afraid to ask ?’s it’s your boat and your check book. The survivor works for you.

I found my guy--will set it up

Presently, the boat is shrink wrapped and the broker is pushing to do a preliminary survey now (made it sound like they do surveys all winter) and would have the surveyor come back to do the sea trial in late April. I'll ask the surveyor his thoughts. It seems to me the surveyor would want decent temps, an unwrapped boat and access to electricity?

Wants to make a sale! Take your time.
If the broker is any good they should be telling you about temps and all!

Call the survivor himself and ask their opinion. Remember your broker works on commissions. Survivor works on fees.

BCKMA---thanks so much for the welcome---didn't mean to be so long getting back to you. This purchase has been ten years in the making with lots of detours and speed bumps along the way. Although aware of Tiara and their reputation, it wasn't where I was looking. I was more interested in Blackfins and Bertrams for day cruising despite the weather capability. Then--poof---this Tiara 3100 came up on my radar, I researched it a bit, realized it was the perfect compromise for me and each day since I have fallen more in love with the boat and the combination of engineering and design. I am so relieved I hadn't purchased anything else first.

Misdirection: thanks for the guidance. Cap't Brett set me up with a list of local surveyors and I am quite pleased with the one I've signed on. Things look good so I'm hopeful.
