battery charger
#1
My 1998 31ft Tiara open has a Pro Mariner protech-4 battery charger in it that when I turn the breaker on its ok for two to three minutes then it trips the breaker. Any thoughts a bad breaker? I hear a buzz then it trips and both units seem just warm to the touch. Any ideas?

It is more likely there is a short in the charger, but it could be the breaker. I think that it could also be a short in one of the batteries, but I'm not positive of that. First I would check all of the connections and make sure they are clean and tight. You may want to load test the batteries (must be separated from the bank before you can load test). If all checks out, then check the breaker and then the charger.

Obviously the breaker is cheaper to replace than having the charger repaired. If you are electrically inclined, you could try and swap the breaker for another one of the same Amp rating and see if that solves your problem. If it does not, then the Pro Mariner needs to be sent back to the factory for repair.

If you are not mechanically and electrically competent, hire a marine electrician to repair the issue. Messing with batteries and electrical can be very dangerous, especially in a gas boat.

Thanks for the info I checked output of charger by removeing the charger leads from each battery then turned it on and read 14.67 volts which is where it should be. Checked batteries and after 24hr. stand they read 12.6 which is normal so Im heading towards a bad breaker.

Well changed the breaker it ran for 20min. then tripped again further inspection I saw one of the leads from charger to battery had a plastic fuse holder that seemed cross threaded and not screwed in very far. Took it apart screwed it back in and the charger has been on ever since. I guess I have a spare breaker now LOL
