Tiara Open De-laminated anchor locker
#1
New to us 1992 33 tiara open.

Purchased unseen with only survey, pictures and the good reputation of tiara brand. Once delivered I realized it had serious de-lamination on top side of anchor locker where eyelet(not sure if this is correct name) stainless piece that you secure anchor chain to is bolted down through the deck. I inquired with the fiberglass team at marina and they said it will be costly and they couldn’t even begin to quote until next year. I’m completely ignorant on this subject. The top of the deck feels sound no give except the eye bolt(not sure this is correct name) is loose because it’s delaminates underneath. Any words of wisdom. Starting point. We are in Bay City Michigan heated winter storage.

Also any suggestion on a windless system for this boat? They quoted $8000 (not including fixing the de-lamination) does this sound correct?

It is wired for windless already they said.

I cant speak for the delamination, bit $8K for a windlass seems very overpriced, especially if its already wired. I would have thought $2k to $3k max installed. The windlass itself is probably under $1K, you could investigate installing yourself. Otherwise, I would be shopping around other marina's for pricing.

I agree. $8K sounds quite high to install a windlass. Regarding delamination I would get that surveyor back to the boat to sound the deck. If the deck is wet he should have easily caught it during the inspection. With a little luck you don't have wide spread intrusion and the soft spots can be cut out from inside the locker and re-glasssed. Not a terrible job at all since there is no real cosmetic work needed. I would assume that work needs to be completed prior to the windlass install. Maybe that's where the $8K came from?

Hi, I surveyed several and bought 2 different Tiaras. (long story)
De-lamination is common in Tiaras and can be severe. A 36 Open in my marina had wet sides and the repair was over $60k.
I surveyed a 4000 Express. It had the sides repaired at significant cost BUT the windlass area was wet still and the swim platform was a mess. I was quoted $10k for the windlass area and $15k for the swim deck. I walked.
All of this being said, consider the structural impact of the area affected and see if you can find and eliminate the intrusion. If it would allow the anchor Eye to be ripped from the locker, it needs fixed. There are multiple theories and ways to fix de-lamination. Get multiple proposals.

Good luck!

I do not feel that we had an accurate survey. There may be more than just the anchor locker which is obvious to me. I think we should probably invest in a local survey again so we know what we are dealing with. Anyone have recommendations for Bay City Michigan area?

Dave Boersma of Harbor Marine Surveying is pretty good. He is on the west side of the state but travels all over. 616-502-0245. He knows Tiaras inside and out and has surveyed my last few boats

Marc Nugent is over in Traverse City but travels. Extremely knowledgeable and has done some work directly for Tiara in the past... We bought a 39 Sovran in Harbor Springs sight unseen using him to first visually inspect then survey the boat.

He was unavailable when we bought our 42 Open over in Algonac so based on another recommendation, we used these guys and were happy.

Also used Jack Morman when we bought our 3200. Very knowledgeable about Tiara models and we were happy with results.

Jack Morman is who you want when buying a Tiara and not who you want when selling one Smile. He is very knowledgeable! he could also give you references on a reliable person to the repair. He surveyed my Trophy 235 and my 33 Tiara. The Tiara has some wet spots in the cockpit area which helped bring the prove down and setup up with a local guy to repair it. The first Tiara 31 he surveyed was way overpriced and it ended selling for exactly what he valued it at 6 months later. Tell Chris Ardanowski referred you!
