Chlorine is harsher than bromide for the metal in the system. It is my experience that chlorine is more effective however (at least in salt water).

Thanks guys for all the input. My AC guy also recommends bromine over chlorine since it's less caustic. As to the strainer baskets, they're plastic, so shouldn't be a problem.
