Tiara Open Trans Cooler Replacement Project 2700 open
#1
Hi there,

On our recently acquired 2700, the engine surveyor highlighted some concerning corrosion around the rear of the trans coolers (see photo) and recommended replacement of these.

The indicated part # is 63832A1 and the surveyor indicated that OEM is not needed on this part and they are relatively cheap.  I see these that indicate they are US made - any issues going with these?

As for replacement, how involved is this?  I have no experience with boat transmissions and since these involve both coolant (or is it raw water?) and the trans fluid, I'm concerned it could be quite a bear to do.

Any advice on this is welcome!

Thank you.

Hello,
If you are at all handy and access to the coolers isn't awful, this isn't a bad task. I believe the coolers are salt water. If so, even easier. You can close the sea cocks and pull off the water hose. You will get maybe a gallon of sea water in the boat, no harm. Wrench off the xmission lines and quickly tape off the ends to keep from losing too much fluid. Have an oil pad under the cooler to catch any fluid spillage. If there is enough slack in the fluid lines, you can try to pull them higher than your gearbox to stop leakage.
You will need to make sure they are salt water cooled. You should be able to trace the lines back to the sea cock.
Regards,
Paul

I've used mr cool before they have good products and as Paul said it's not that big of a good if you get a exact replacement.

Can you update us on how the project went? I also have a recently acquired 1986, 2700 Open with twin Crusader 270 gas engines, fresh water cooled. Are these the same engines you have?

I just did my port side on my 3100. It’s a cake walk. No need to close seacocks. BUT your trans must have sea water in it. Mine did.  I changed the fluid 6x. But am having an issue. When the engine is cold it shifts perfect. When engine warms up, I have no reverse or forward. I have no ideas.  Fluid is clean and full. Help
