I have a 2006 Sovran 4300 and am having trouble looking under my Volvo 370 engine. Lost a few items in the well under engine and also looking to see if I can find a suspect engine oil leak.
Any tips for improved lighting or any useful tool, camera, etc.?????
I'm too big to fit into small places. ( I know the Sovran has good engine room space)
Here are some tricks I’ve used before Gerard. Any can be found at a home improvement and/or auto supply store…
- for finding lost items, get a retractable magnet. Ends up looking like a long, telescoping stick, but has a magnet on the end.
- mirrors can be helpful. You can also find these on telescoping sticks like mentioned above or handheld work great. A last in your life might even have an extra one laying around from a makeup kit.
- your phone, either by itself or on a selfie stick can be used to take pics or a video, especially in particularly tight spots.

One tip if you're an iphone user--the phone determines whether or not to turn the LED light on when shooting video based on how much light is available when the video is started. You can hold your finger over the camera lens while starting a video to force the LED to light up. Then you move the phone around to video record the hard-to-see areas while also lighting them up. Have used that trick many times.
