2000 3500 Open. Going to pull the trigger on the Hurley H2O 36" extended roll on davit system.
I've contacted the folks at Tiara but can't get a straight answer as to the make up of the swim platform. Seems the CAD drawing they have is corrupted. I'd like to now what I'm drilling into before drilling.
Anyone out there actually drilled into this year/model or at least model?
The swim platform is the integrated type that's about 29" deep. My expectation is that it's hollow balsa cored. Just not sure if there's any plywood in that mix or not. I'm planning on over drilling the holes, fill with epoxy, redrill and use toggles. Hoping that if it is just gelcoat/glass/balsa that that will be sufficient. The 36" extensions mount for and aft which seems better than just a single mount point from a torsion perspective.
On a 3500 Open, if you get into the rear bilge area and look aft, you can see the space between the upper swim platform decking and the lower platform decking. I think there would be enough room to place nuts/washer in that area. Might be kind of a pain to reach all the way to the very rear of the platform though.
So Kent, it sounds like maybe you bolted straight through the top and bottom then since you used washers? Otherwise, how did you access the nuts and washers?
I'll need to mount 4 plates, 2 fore and 2 aft. For the fore ones, bolting through doesn't seem like it would work since the underside of the platform isn't parallel with the top.
Tom, I did ask the Tiara support person about access from inside the bilge and he said there wasn't any. Going to head down to the mooring today and take a look. Mine is the all in one molded into the boat platform. I don't recall being able to see inside the swim platform from the bilge but maybe it was foamed in. It would be great if that were the case. Do you know if the top side of the platform is plywood on yours?
I just got back from the boat. Got down in the bilge and you can see the inside of the whole swim platform top and bottom. Plenty of room to work in there as well from 3-4 inches at least. I'll just drill the holes and put some pressure treated wood in there from front to back spanning both mounts for added measure. Will probably still over-size the holes and fill with 610 and then drill through that to prevent any water wicking.
I would use starboard if I was you. Won't rot and it plenty dense enough to bolt thru and hold washers on reverse side. More expensive but you won't have to worry about moisture EVER.
