Spider Cracks on cockpit deck on 3100 open
#1
I have 1997 3100 open that has developed spider cracks in the non skid on the lower deck right where you step down. There does not seem to be any flexing in the deck and nothing has been dropped on it. I asked Tiara about it and they said that it is not common. So am I the first and only one this is happening to? If not were you able to find a cause and correct it? How do I fix it or do I just have to live with it? I hope that it is purely cosmetic and not structural. Any thoughts?

When I contacted Tiara they acted as if it never happened to anyone before. All I wanted to know is what was causing it and what can I do to prevent it and fix what is already their. Mine are straight down the center of the cockpit from the step to the fish box, along the stern where the transom meets the deck. It started with one and has grown throughout the season. My boat is stored indoors all winter in a heated storage. Have you found a cause or a fix?

Seems to be common theme. My 98 31 Open has a few in the same spot right where one steps down from the upper cockpit. The non skid "shapes" are actually wearing away a bit from the foot traffic.  My cracks however are only a few inches, not all the way to the fish boxes.  There are a couple along the aft fishbox across the hinge but they are really minor.

I'd hope it's cosmetic as well. I saw a story about gel-coat cracking because of compression caused by the straps on the travel lift when boats are hoisted.  The article was focusing on the gunnels and topsides, but if the straps are compressing the whole boat, cockpit center-line would be a weak point between the gunnels. Just a thought?

Mine started out with one crack at the end of last season (October) and spread over winter. The boat is stored in a heated storage every year and it is not lifted by a travel lift it is put on a hydraulic trailer so no pressure on the haul or sides.  I hope that yours don't multiply like mine have.
