Cockpit Voltmeter Search
#1
Hello All,
I am searching for information on a VDO voltmeter in my 1993 Tiara 2900. My starboard voltmeter is reading incorrectly. The cause, believe it or not, is cobwebs inside on the meter face and pointer. Since my model year seems to have been abandon by our friends Holland, MI, I'm on the hunt for a replacement, or better yet, some advice on gauge disassembly to remove the cobwebs.
My latest reason to hate spiders,

I have disassembled 1988 VDO meters and polished the inside of the lens to clear them up. Mine came apart quite easily by just twisting the lens cap. Never had a spider problem. Capt. George

Ahoy Capt. George,
I am delighted to report that my voltmeter is now working like new thanks to your direction. I thought the lens might be threaded, but as you already know, the lens and gasket ring fit in place much like a bottle cork. Now that I that I know the way to open these up, I have a few of mine that are hazy inside and be added to my spring fit-out list.
Thanks again,
Mark

Ahoy Scurvy Dog,
I called off my search once I corrected my original gauge. Thanks to the advice from Capt George, mine works A-OK. That said, I would still like to find a source for VDO instruments used in the 80s-90s models. I have an acquaintance that was the service manager for the exclusive Tiara/Pursuit dealer in western Ohio until the business abruptly closed in 2010. I plan to do more searching at the Cleveland Boat Show in January. Meanwhile, if anyone can tell us the a product line name or other way to better identify the product, it would be a big help.
Best holiday wishes,
Mark

I have the VDO catalog from that era. They are VDO "Blue Line" 52 MM and 85 MM gauges. All the part numbers for the instruments and senders are listed. It's too much to list here. Let me know what information you need. Capt. George
