engine hatch lifting pistons or drive screw?
#1
I have a 1989 31' Tiara. The engine hatches lift up via 20" long cylinders that are about 2" in diameter, and have an electric motor at the base of the cylinder. When I hit the toggle switch to raise the hatch it just makes a grinding sound and the hatch doesn't move. I assume it is worn-out. Do I call Tiara and order one through them? Do I send it someplace to have it repaired? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Does your seating layout have a jump seat? If so you must remove it for the power lift to work.

That "grinding" sound is likely the clutch in the actuator. When all the way down, the clutch actuates, same all the way up. does it make this sound in both directions? If so, the clutch might be worn out. If it's only making it in one direction, likely that's down. The other direction might not be hooked up? I added a pair of pneumatic helper struts to my 3300 open as the single actuator was stressed lifting the deck. My 3700 has two actuators, so no issues.

See if there is a name on the motor somewhere and Google it. Then click on images and see if you can match it up. It maybe a Motion Systems Corp., Eatontown, NJ unit and you could ask their advice on repairing it. Warner Linear is another name to look at. Go to e-Bay and search "Electric hatch lift" Capt. George

I replaced mine on my 33 open last year. The unit was a 'Minipac actuator" by Duff Norton. I contacted them through their website -they were very helpful.

Sawdustdad,
I replaced my actuator last year on my 33, but it is still very slow and stressed. It's a bit faster when I activate both lift switches at the same time.
I am curious how and where you mounted the pnuematics.

I mounted a pair of 100 lb lift struts, one on each aft corner of the bridge deck. Make sure all your connections are clean to maximize voltage to the lift. I don't see anyway to attach pics here, but the struts were approx 18 inches closed, 30 inches open, and mounted to the aft engine room bulkhead and the underside of the deck. Some trial and error needed to get the mount positions correct. Something like these: [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

Thank you for your response and input. Tiara advised me to contact W.C. Ducomb Co. in Grand Rapids, MI. They were $446.00 each plus freight. "Break Out Another Thousand."

Kind regards,
Mack

Ducomb is where I bought the replacement for my 3300 several years ago. I think I paid close to $600 for mine. I'd say you got a deal!
