Hi All,

We purchased our boat last year and one of the maintenance items to do this spring is change out the toggles to the Carling style rocker switches.

Has anyone done this before?  There is some question about there being enough room in the panel to do this.

If I can reuse the existing panel that would be good.  If I need to use a panel blank, can you point me in the direction of a source?

Carling Technologies at carlingtech.com should be able to help. I changed out some of my burnt out 2004 carling switches to the Contura III series which fit in the exact footprint. They are very helpful in matching things up. It would be useful to have a picture of the back of the old switch with wires attached, voltage (12 or 24 V) and the part number off of the switch body. Their number is 860-793-9281. I have been working with Tina Helbig who is very knowledgeable T tina.helbig@carlingtech.com. They will also give you vendors who supply the parts at a good price (fpmarine.com and On.line components.com)

Thanks for the heads up on calling Carling directly. The toggles I believe are Carling products too. From their catalog information the switch bodies are similar in size and termination. The toggles are slightly smaller and my concern is that they are small enough to keep me from modifying the existing panel to upgrade to the Contura rocker switch bodies.

The contura switch body is installed by pushing it into the panel from the top. The toggle switch in mounted on 2 pivot pins on the switch body so they would be above the panel face. If the contura body fits into the original switch opening, the toggle should not be a problem. You can also change out the toggles on the switch body depending on color, illumination, etc.
