Tiara Sovran Replacing courtesy lights in cabin steps
#1
Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions about replacing the festoon bulb in the steps.  There is barely enough slack in the wires to pull the light out and it would appear the lense/frame are one piece.  I tried to get one out an broke the bulb and wonder how to get the new one in without breaking that as well.

Thanks!

I removed the original fixture in the steps and replaced them with LED fixtures purchased from West Marine. Easy project, less heat and less amperage used/needed. Also replaced all halogen bulbs in cabin and cockpit with LED's purchased on Amazon-same result; less heat and amperage.

I have a 2006 36 Sovran. The original fixtures were made by Imtra. One of my fixtures was damaged so I had to replace the entire unit. The replacement is [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

The bulbs can also be replaced with LED. Here is where I got them. [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

Definitely change them out to led. Better light, less amps drawn (a lot less) and you will never have to mess with them again. At least not for about 10,000 hours.

Oh and when you do make sure to leave more wire length to help out the next guy.

I know its a silly question but how do you get to the bulb in these fixtures? It doesn't appear the cover spins and I tried to pry one and the staineless steel ring came off of the fixture. Am I missing something? I swear I can change a light bulb but the one in the headliner of the cabin in my 4500 is really fighting me. It is the first bulb I have needed to replace the previous owner left me some halogen bulbs to do it, but I can't get to the bulb.

I have the same question about almost all the lights. How do you get the trim rings off without breaking them or damaging whatever the fixtures are mounted to? Most look like they just twist off, but don’t seem to. The ones over the galley and under the cabinets to starboard just twist off, but I can’t figure out the ones mounted on the front of the stairs, onto the headliner or in the cockpit. The light fixture with the plunger switch under the top stair also needs replacing.

On my 36 Sovran the covers on lights on the front of the stairs pull off. They are held on with tension. The fixtures were made by Imtra. Unfortunately they are no longer available. They do have a sealed LED replacement

What lights are you specifically talking about

Thanks John. I will try to gently pry the trim rings off the stair lights. I was afraid to damage the fiberglass behind them.
To answer the question from bsause, I'd like to eventually replace all the lamps with led's, in addition to the ones on the front of the stairs, those include the round courtesy lights on the headliner, the reading lights behind the berth and the courtesy lights inside the hardtop in the cockpit.
