I was wondering what was the best method of charging the batteries during winter storage? Anybody use solar panels? Or is the only method to use a splitter from the 50amp line into to 30amps from two different sources?
I bought an adapter that goes from 50 amps to 30 amps and built an extension cord taking it down to a 20 amp 110 plug. There is an outlet right behind my boat in the shed that I plug into. I'm only powering the half of the panel that the converter is on. The only thing I run is the converter and a few lights when I'm at the boat.

I remain in the water during the winter months and leave the chargers on full time. Also have small catalytic heaters in the bilge and cabin that are thermostatically controlled. Keep setting at 55. Works great. BTW the boat is a 2003 and I have always kept the charger on all year round. My GEL batteries are, believe it or not, original from the factory. That makes them 17 years old.. Tested them before this winter and they show in excellent condition. Not sure how much longer they will be good and know replacing 6 at one time will be expensive...

best to get line power to the house charger and let it do its thing. It should have multi stage charging that will float the batteries and keep them fully charged.
