Hi

We just got a 3900 Sovran and haven’t been given comprehensive instructions on operating all systems. I have questions on generator usage.

Can you run the generator while underway? 
Does the generator charge the batteries? 
Does Running the engines and generators overcharge the batteries?
What is the startup sequence (gen first or engines first)?

If you use both while underway, could you please list your steps launching the boat from the slip with shore power on?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

While I do not have the same setup as you, below is in general accepted practices.

Can you run the generator while underway?  Yes you can run the generator while underway. Many do.

Does the generator charge the batteries?  The generator will charge it's starting battery and any connected to it thru battery switches, likewise, if the charger is on it will charge all batteries connected to it. Of course those batteries need to be calling for a charge to be charged.

Does Running the engines and generators overcharge the batteries? No.

What is the startup sequence (gen first or engines first)? It doesn't really matter. But I start my motors first.

If you use both while underway, could you please list your steps launching the boat from the slip with shore power on?

Start motors. Start generator. If manual cut over, move power selector switch to off, then generator. Unplug shore power. Cast off lines and motor away!

Misdirection is spot on in all respects. It is also a good practice to allow for a cool down period prior to securing the genset. Mainly if it has been run hard for a while (heavy load). In these cases take the load off the generator for a few minutes and then shut it down.

I always start the generator first. Once those diesels are running I can't hear the generator start up.

Other than that my sequence is the same

I really appreciate the replies. We had a hot one yesterday and we were out on the lake in the afternoon. I had the generator running the entire time. It was pretty comfortable in the salon with all the air conditioners.

Good tip on starting the generator first as I couldn’t hear if it started with the engines running. Had to open the hatch to check. I will also follow cool down procedure as jclark mentioned.
