4000 Express tender/davit install
#1
Just finished installing a new davit/tender on my 1995 4000 Express. Tender is a Walker Bay Gen LTE 10 w/ 30hp Tohatsu. (550 lb. Wet) Davit is a Hurley Marine H30+ and was secured using backing plates inside the platform. I’m also using a 4 point tie down system also with backing plates. Trunk is still accessible with an inch or two to spare when the tender is on the davit. Very happy with the end result.

Nice set-up! Just curious — how did you do backing plates? Did you remove the under half of the platform?

I accessed the platform by cutting a hole in the bottom. My yard did the fiberglass repair.

Interesting, I was looking at putting an H30 on my 4700 Sovran as well bit I noticed that you can’t get to the underside of the platform. I was wondering how I would be able to bolt it through. This obviously looks like the trick to do so. Nice job

I just upgraded from the Hurley H30 (400 lb capacity) to the H30+ (750 lb capacity), so I already had the tie downs/backing plates from my earlier installation. Only one access point was required for this upgrade but you may have to make at least three if you don’t already have existing tie downs.

My yard retained the fiberglass piece removed and simply replaced it once the new davit pin plates were installed. We intentionally placed the hole where the repaired area would only require bottom paint to finish.

So I’ve had this set up for a little over a month now and absolutely love it. It’s remarkable how easy it is to load this 500+ lb. tender with the Hurley H30+ winch system. It’s easily managed with just one person.

It should be noted that this tender weighs approximately 300 pounds more than my old Zodiac set up which resulted in the stern sitting lower in the water. With full fuel tanks, my transom exhaust under the swim platform was completely submerged. This was worrisome as I didn’t want to create a siphon effect that could bring water into the boat or engines. I solved the problem by replacing my 200’ of anchor chain with 400’ of 1/4” G4 high strength anchor chain. (Yes, it all fit!) This leveled out the boat perfectly and brought the exhaust back to its original position above the surface plus gives us more anchoring options when we’re up north. Again, super happy with this new setup.

It’s been a couple years since my original post but I thought I would add another nice feature of this Hurley H30+ davit installation. While many davits with cradle systems need to mounted permanently, this Hurley set up is easily removable. Simply pull out the two ring pins (I did get a couple spares), slide the davit forward an inch or so, and lift it off of the mounting plates. The davit can then be stored in the trunk to clear the swim platform. This is a great feature if you’re going to be anchored up for a few days
