I recently discovered a decent crack and chip out of one of my transom doors. I delayed repair until being out of the water and upon disassembly, realized they may not be fiberglass but rather a plastic. Anyone know what these are made of and how I might go about making a repair?
Well, since posting, I've learned more and figured I'd share here. The door is acrylic, so cracks cannot be reliably (and aesthetically) fixed. There are basically two ways to fix it. Option 1 is to "sandwich" the door with 1/8" acrylic, but in doing this there's no guarantee of it lasting 3 months or 3 years. Option 2 is to have it remade locally. At $500 each, I'm contemplating my next move.
Also chatted with Brian at Tiara. They ordered them specific to each boat from an outfit called Total Plastics that apparently will not remake or support them in any fashion.
From the picture, that material looks alot like starboard. Might be worth your time to order a piece and see if you or someone local who is handy can replicate what you have from it.
