My port engine all of sudden began to over heat. So we shut it down, and began to check the usual suspects. Yes I needed to change my strainer. Yes we needed to change the impeller, yes we needed to add coolant. We take off the hoses and back flush them, everything seems clear. We pulled the hose off then end from the pump, it seemed to pump okay, but who knows. so we did the same thing with the starboard engine (which was running fine) and compared the water out put, hmmm starboard putting out twice as much as the port. So we conclude we still have a restriction. Now what? The last hose comes from the strainer in the thru hull, around front by the oil cooler(?), which was harder to get to. But that shouldnt be the one, there is a strainer on the tru hull so things shouldnt be past there. Well we got it pulled off, and guess what, it was filled with little tiny leaves, leaf particles etc. Almost look like someone put a wad of chew in there.
So to summarize, keep those strainers clean, as things can and do get by them!!!
changing the impeller is a good first step, although there could be more. And dont forget, you have a correct working example 6" away!! The other motor!!
