I am wondering if anyone has a source for Groco plastic strainer baskets at a reasonable price.  The best I have seen is about $38 for the smallest size.  I hate to be cheap but they need to be replaced frequently in South Florida and they look like they should cost about $10.  I know it is a dumb complaint when everything else on the boat starts at $500.   Also does anyone have an opinion on using the metal baskets vs. the plastic ?

I just went through this decision process on needing a replacement for a basket on one of my mains. Went with the metal one because several folks told me the plastic ones are prone to break and easy to not get seated correctly, leaving them bent and not filtering correctly. I just ordered one online. Was like $45

I have a 2003 38 Open w/Groco metal baskets (1 for each engine and 1 for the generator). All are original and seem to be in excellent shape. Always seat correctly when re-installed after servicing. M2C

I just rebuilt the strainers on my 2003 35 Open....the metal strainers hold up well.  I was told when I purchased the rebuild kits that the metal strainers are worth the extra money as compared to the plastic.  I replaced the sight glasses/gaskets/bolts on each strainer...the actual metal strainers therein were in good shape still and didn't need replacement.

I have always had metal and never needed to replace them. I don't know why you would ever use plastic since it will get brittle sooner or later and possibly send pieces upstream and into the impeller. Save a few bucks on plastic, spend a lot of money on a tow, new impeller pump and possibly worse. Doesn't seem worth the risk.
