Hello TOC

Hello.

Peninsular owns a 26' Tiara Pursuit and last year we re-powered it with a 6.5L 300 hp turbo diesel. It was the first season on the water for "Diesel Dazzle" since the re-power. We run on Lake Michigan out of the Montague/Whitehall area. We've been spending the summer knocking out a list of minor repairs to the boat (like replacing the bilge pump float!).

There are a few Tiara boats out there with Peninsular Diesels in them. We'd like you all to know that Peninsular Engines is alive and well and we'd like to participate in this forum to support those Tiara owners who run Peninsular Diesels. We promise not to annoy you with active sales and marketing. However, we have made a lot of improvements to the 6.5L marine diesel. If you're considering a re-power, we have a great value for the money. We're here to keep your boat out on the water where you can enjoy it..

Hey Bert - welcome to the site. It is always good to have experienced diesel mechanics participating on the site. I might ping you from time to time on diesel issues. I understand you repowered up to 6.5L 300hp, but what did you come out of and how many hours on the engines when you decided to repower? I would be interested to get some more specifics of the project.

One thing I would like to get your opinion on are guages to monitor EGT and boost pressure. I am getting ready to add them to my boat and would welcome your thoughts. Thanks.

Hey guys -

Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to this.

@Keith - When Peninsular bought the Diesel Dazzle there were some issues with the power that was in it. Being the company that we are, the decision was easy to replace the engine with a new 300 HP turbo diesel. Among the reasons was that a newly painted engine would serve as a show/sales tool. Because it's the company boat, it's also a fluid piece of gear - in other words, we do a lot of experimenting on it. We've fussed with the cooling system, completely rebuilt the Konrad stern drive, replaced the prop (and promptly damaged it and had it repaired), and some other miscellaneous stuff. If you're really curious about the details, feel free to call us and talk to Matt. He's the queso-grande here and it's his baby.

As for the gauges for the exhaust and turbo boost - those are not gauges that we typically include with our panel. Our panel includes a volt meter, tach, oil pressure and water temp, along with the glow plug timer switch and a couple of alarms. Boost gauges are something we typically sell to the automotive crowd but isn't usually of interest to our marine customers. Of course we can get the guages for you - but on the other end is the sensors. The turbo exhaust housing would need to be drilled and tapped to install these sensors. Our engines have water cooled exhaust housings, so one would have to be careful where the sensors are located.

Let me know if you want more information on this subject.
