Good afternoon: I am considering a 4000 Express and was down in the engine room of one today with Cummins power. I like to do as much of my own work as I can. The outboard side of both engines is tight! It looks like you can get to that side of both engines by going around the forward (over the transmission) of the motors. Once you're there is there enough room to work on things (filters, Aftercoolers, etc). I'm not a big guy, but I'm not a kid anymore either. Thanks in advance. Leigh
I mean, you saw it with your own eyes. I have the same boat with CATS and it’s no different. They’re wedged in there. I suspect getting to some stuff on the outboard sides will require some removal of other parts and serious boat yoga. But at some point it is what it is.
I have a 4000 Express with Cummins 6CTA8.3 mains. There is enough room to get the job done. You can go over the top of the engine, from the front or aft. I just had aftercoolers off and changed all filters. Any good mechanic should have no problem. Good luck!
I have a 3500 express with the same engines that came on the 4000 express (Cummins 6CTA)..... To replace the components between engine and fuel tanks has been a bit challenging, I have done pretty much everything from the alternator & starter (port) and aftercooler & waterpump (starboard) and this was without lifting the hatch.. You have to put your belly on top of the engine pretty much and make sure you have something to drink.. I would expect the 4000 to have a little more room to play and I bet the CAT 3208 take more space since its not 6 in line.
Guys, thank you for your input. Confirms my impressions, tight, but doable. I am taking another look at this boat over the weekend and will report back. Leigh
You’ll love the boat. It’s a tremendously versatile platform, incredibly well designed, and rock solid. After two years with ours, I’m still finding things designers did and think “huh, that was smart…”. (Except the placement of the ac pump and strainer. I could kick someone over that — HA!!)
