Looking at purchasing a 3500 Open, I heard the 7.4L Crusaders are not a good fit for the boat. 8.1L or diesels are the way to go. Anyone own one or have any information for me?

I have an older 36 open with 7.4's. I've never felt under powered and I've been out in some slop on Erie. Cruise is 21 knots at 3200 rpm and educated guess is .75 mpg. If I were looking at another boat in the same size, I'd prefer 8.1's.

In had a 2000 35 Open with 7.4 MPIs with 4 blade props and cruised at 25/26 mph at 3400rpms. Got .8 MPG. The 35 with 370 HP Cummins cruises at 29/30 mph and gets 1,2 MPG. More power is always better but, if its a nice boat I don't think you will be too disappointed with the performance. Good Luck
