I am trying to get an idea of what size flax was used on an '89 3100 convertible with 454s. I finally tightend the packing nut to stop a persistent leak but want to completely service them by removing the old flax.
First of all you would be far better off using GFO packing rather than flax. The price is about the same. Search on eBay for "GFO Packing" . You will need about one foot per shaft. The new Gore-Tex packing is a one time job and on the 31 it's not fun getting in there to make adjustments. With the GFO you set it and forget it.
I seem to remember that it's 1/4" on the 31.
Next I would get a one foot long piece of 4 inch hose ( recheck this size, I am not sure) and cut it length wise and slide it over the stuffing box to act as a splash guard and stop any drips from flying around the engine room. You will be so happy with this set up and never have to crawl in there again. Capt. George
