I have a 1998 3100 Open with an old Icom IC-M127 VHF where the display is almost completely faded from the sun. Want to get a new raido and was wondering what people think about adding AIS. The boat also has a Simrad NSS8 chart plotter and Simrad AP11 autopilot. I was looking at the Simrad RS40B VHF radio that has an integrated AIS transceiver that I think would integrate into the chartplotter for the AIS. Or should I just go with a Icom M330G or 424G radio with the option to add AIS at a later date?
AIS is a nice to have, but at a minimum, I would buy a radio with built in GPS and make sure you register for your MMSI and input it. One touch mayday with your location transmitted...

Not sure how important AIS is to you but I agree with the ability to transmit your MMSI identification in case of an emergency. Many VHF radios integrate easily with your GPS via NMEA 183 or NMEA 2000 providing MMSI identification, GPS position, speed, etc.... Your call M2C
Recently install an icom 506 with AIS and found it very helpful and well worth the extra $100. That said I integrated into my N2K network which allowed my Furuno MFD to overlay the data on radar and chartplotter screens. Worked really well. Not sure it would be that helpful using the tiny icom display however.
I have this unit, it’s fantastic. We are big cruisers so AIS transponder and receiver is important to me. Capt preference really. I do think as boating safety evolves AIS will be on all boats.
