Just found this site. Bought a 2008 Sovran 3900 this year. Based in Jacksonville, we cruise mostly between Fernandina Beach and Palm Coast, and like to hang in St. Augustine a lot.

Welcome!! I also have an 08 39 Sovran. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions and I'll gladly provide my contact details. I've had the boat for 3 seasons and have had the opportunity to learn a lot about her and her systems...

Thanks, Maxwell. I'll take you up on that. I'm in warm water and I notice that my ac strainer is getting a lot of growth very quickly. Do you have an opinion on the chlorine or bromine tablet idea? Some say it kills everything and keeps it clean. Others say that the acid will eat the ac tubing. Thought?

Being a fresh water guy, I don't have first hand experience with bromine or chlorine beyond what I have read; and that seems to vary widely depending on who you listen to. Some prefer Bromine, others Chlorine and yet others suggest putting a few pieces of copper or pennies in your AC strainer. The one consistent thing that most seemed to agree on is the fact that chlorine or bromine will cause premature failure of your strainer baskets over time. I can't imagine that they're overly expensive, just something to keep an eye on.

If you don't use bromide or chlorine, you will have to have your system acid washed. Either way, you will be running harsh chemicals through the system. If you live in warm water and you keep your boat in the water, I suggest using the tablets.

I agree with Chris, and use chlorine tablets, about 1" diameter size. My boat lives in warm Southern salt water, and growth requires strainer clean out about each 10 to 14 days. I do store the chlorine off the boat as the packaging tends to "leak" the chlorine aroma.

I am told by a A/C guy that Bromine tablets are preferred over Chlorine. It's been awhile....I don't remember the explanation
