1995 31 Open. Purchased 4 years ago and bilge has always been pretty dry. Now taking on water and searching for source. Seems unrelated to engine operation as water accumulates overnight when engines not running. I see what could be small drips from through hull transducer and one shaft, but doesn't seem fast enough for the rate water accumulates in bilge.

Sprinkle talcum powder around any suspect areas and that will show you where it's coming from. Check your rudder posts and your fresh water tank.

I have a 1992 3100 Open. It may be the shaft seals need re-packed. My marina charged me $25.00 + 1 hour.

Turns out there is a pretty steady leak from the starboard shaft/stuffing box on the hull side (as opposed to engine side). Local boat yard says boat has to come out of water for repair and will cost $1000.00 (their minimum denomination of currency).

Since my experience in boat repair is limited to writing checks, does this sound reasonable?

Not sure if that is a good price.  I am used to the fact that very little costs under $1000 at the repair shop.

If you can get good access to the packing nut you can change the packing while afloat. Be sure to install GFO packing. It lasts almost forever and can be found on eBay. If there is good access and the nuts can be broken loose it's a one hour job.
