I use mine on Lake Erie when running at night / early morning and if a fog sets in. Just one extra safety mechanism when needed.
A few years ago, a friend whose a charter captain used his to locate a small disabled boat who had issued a mayday and stood by until the coast guard arrived. It was a small bass boat whose main wouldn't start back up, anchor didn't hold (not enough rode for the conditions) and was small enough that it made it hard to see in the chop.
