In terms of specific tools, if you’re starting from nothing, I’d get a small starter kit (general set of sockets, allen wrenches, maybe needle nose pliers, and a couple open wrenches.
From there, you’ll kind of add as you need it, but the stuff I use the most are:
- Vise Grips or adjustable pliers
- Filter wrench
- 6-in-1 (basically a fancy screwdriver. Can be found at any Lowe’s/HD). Can be used as screwdriver and wrench on most hose clamps
- Rubber mallet
- Zip ties
- Spanner wrench for opening strainers
- Lighter
- Pipe dope (not teflon tape!)
- Electrical tape
- Telescoping magnet (you can thank me later)
I think that would get you started. Others might have more. But like I said, you’ll find you add as you go along.
Good luck!
I also have the following:
- Hose clamps (in a few different sizes)
- Manual bilge pump
- Applicable fluids (transmission fluid, oil, coolant)
- Needlenose pliers
- Knife / Boxcutter
- Extra hose piece (just enough to do a Macguyver fix to get you back to shore)
