My friend put in a gen last summer in his 31' '96. They disconnected the bolts to the Pistons connecting the hatch and I think removed the hatch motor to make room. They were able to shim the hatch open more to allow room too drop the gen into the rear of the compartment. Not sure if you have the same setup, Took some work but worked.
