Most Diesel Engine Surveyors have extensive Diesel engine repair experience. Many are or were Diesel mechanics. I would however ask these questions when interviewing them. I would also suggest hiring the certified diesel engine dealer/service center to survey the engines (Call your local Cummins dealer for Cummins and Cat for your Caterpillars). This however is not always an option. Our local CAT dealer will not survey engines. The only way they will survey engines is if you are purchasing extended warranty coverage on eligible engines. Our local Volvo Diesel dealer however is happy to inspect engines. When it comes time to have survey deficiencies quoted, I would however get more than one quote, especially if you are receiving a quote from the person that did the inspection.
