when hauling out my boat for the season the marina told me the boat wasnt lunging into gear when you put in gear like it normally does, well come to find out i had a bad trans oil cooler and i had no trans oil in the starboard engine, i fixed the trans oil cooler problem and replaced the old one, my question is do you think i should put the trans oil in RIGHT NOW or just in the spring when i go to launch again? if it sits all winter with no oil in trans will that hurt it?
I would add oil right now and recheck again in the spring and adjust the level as necessary. Even though its hardened steel, it can develop a coating of rust if let sit long enough.
thank you, thats what im going to do, im just praying i didnt mess anything up with the trans???? i drove it all season and drove perfectly, then it sat in the well for 2 weeks , then they went to pull the boat out for the season, thats when they noticed it, they only drove it about half a mile at idle speed, it did shift into forward and reverse, i hope its ok......praying
If the boat moved under its own power and they didn't run up the power to where it was slipping under heavy load then you are probably ok. It had to have some oil in it or it wouldn't have gone into gear in the first place. if the clutches slip and heat up (from low oil pressure) they can warp which will show itself as oil that has a burnt smell to it and or a shaft that rolls while in neutral. Misdirection is spot on. Get some oil in it for the winter layup. if you suspect water intrusion and the boat is already out of the water, fill the gear case to the top with oil to imurse all internal parts. Drain down to proper level prior to spring launch.
I would do a fill and drain then fill again on the trans oil also make sure to inspect and clean the trans filter after that I would check the oil pressure with a transmission pressure gauge for peace of mind. Might as well do the same with the other trans and then you have a baseline for the pressure reading.
