may be a dumb question, i got a pump out the other day, i noticed a slight smell, is there a filter in the head area?? can you clean them or change them?? thank you

There is a filter on the vent line coming off of the holding tank that occasionally needs replaced. Especially if your holding tank were full and you were in rough seas and the filter got wet.

But mine had a little odor earlier this year. We pumped out, poured a gallon of beach (if you can find it) in the holding tank, filled the holding 3/4 full of water and then rocked the boat to slosh it around.

Left it sit for 10 minutes and pumped out again. Haven't had any issues since.

Be SUPER Carefull pouring bleach into the holding tank. If there is any ammonia (urine) left in there you will create the equivalent of Mustard Gas and kill everybody involved. Google chlorine and ammonia, see what happens.

I found out the hard way. We had one of those little 2 piece toilets where you remove the bottom piece and pour it out into a toilet. I put some bleach into it to "Clean" it and a smoke started to come out over the rim. It was really bad stuff. I immediately poured water from the hose in and diluted it. Scary stuff.

I replace my vent filter once a year. Never have any smell.

where exactly is the vent filter?under the floor board in the hallway before you enter the head?

It's on the vent line coming off the holding tank. On my 36 Open, the holding tank is in the engine room, port side up by the forward bulkhead.

We have looked everywhere for this vent, still can’t find it.. pulled the helm forward nothing, pulled the seat in the cabin apart nothing. Looked in the engine room looked under the floor board in the hallway before you get to the head nothing.  It’s driving me crazy. I really want to fix the smell  problem.. has any one found the filter, if so please send me a picture of where  INSIDE a 38 open that it’s located. everyone is saying where it is located, but I’ve looked and nothing. ?

Filter on my 41 is under a hatch on the starboard side in the galley. The filter is a long slender white plastic with a hose barb on both sides.

I had some smell coming from my holding tank and added a bunch of west marine tank cleaner and deodorizer. Its dark blue stuff and has a bit of a peppermint smell. Cleared it right up.

We have a 38 open 2002 and took the whole boat apart and can’t find the filter anywhere and still can’t get rid of the smell.. help
