Good day Forum members we are new owners of a 2009 3900 Tiara Sovran with Pod Volvo Diesel IPS 500 engines. My question to the forum is the sea strainers on the engines , they have a bit of crud in them and I would like to clean them out , since they are above the water line and look to be provided with water from the pods pump is it ok to clean the filter without closing the valve . Also marine technician told me ( supplement from a margin tech with owners manual things to do ) when I reseal the cap to put some Palmolive dish soap around the seal ? Just a dab , has anyone heard of this ?
If the strainer is above the waterline then no issues cleaning it out with the valve open. Some of the early IPS models had the strainers mounted above the alternator. In these cases care should be taken not to allow water to drip down. Soap, glycerin or o ring grease are often used to help seal o rings and make it easier to remove in the future.

Thank you very much for the quick reply, I am going to the boat this weekend and will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the courteous response!
Just a very late follow up, everything went well and cleaning the strainers was no problem, I did add a little bit of glycerin to the seals and have not had any problems. Once again, I know this is a very late reply but thank you.
