Sea Water strainer drain plug
#1
Hello all, Merry Christmas.

My 2006 3000 Open with Cummins 5.9 engines has a broken seawater strainer drain plug.

What brand bronze strainer did that boat come with and any ideas on where to pick up some new plugs.

Here is a pic of the current style plug. Pic that I have is to large to post, but it is a plastic square head.  Is there an upgrade with better quality?

Thanks,

Pat

The raw water strainers are manufactured by GROCO (ARG series). I to have broken the drain plug off specifically when overtightened..... Learned they don't have to be to tight to be closed. They have an "O" ring to help them seal. In any case they use to have a hex head but were changed to square to prevent anyone from using a wrench to tighten....... Believe any good marine store can get you the parts. That has been my experience. Assume WEST MARINE could get them for you.... Believe they are 1/4 x 20 thread......  I carry a spare just in case I break one during servicing.

Bought a couple of these at West Marine this year. They are quite expensive for a little nylon screw. You might find them a a Lowes or a Home Depot also. You will need the little o-ring that goes on there too

I'm not a fan of using hardware store fittings on engines. Factory engine parts are made to certain specifications for heat, strength and tolerances. I just wouldn't trust something like that on something as important as an engine. If the factory part fails and you have an issue, you have some recourse. If you use something other than a factory original part and it fails and causes other issues, then you have no recourse.

Just my $.02.

Have a great day!
