Prop seal leak
#1
Have just noticed that when underway the aft bilge pump is running constantly. I believe that the shaft seal or stuffing box on the prop shaft(s) are the culprit. I can stop and the mid bilge takes up the slack and empties the bilge. No noticeable leakage at rest. 2005 Tiara 32 open. access looks like a bear. Anyone do this themselves?

Twin Volvo 310 diesels if it makes a difference!

Make sure it is the dripless shaft before taking it on. I thought ours was leaking, but noticed water coming in through the transducer for the depth sounder. It was not noticeable because the infloor fish box concealed it. I noticed the leak when doing some cleaning. Fixed that and the bilge remained dry. Replacing seals requires pulling the boat. There is sometimes a spare seal that is installed and can be used. If not, the prop shafts need to be disconnected from the transmissions before installing the new parts. After that, realign the flanges and you are good to go. As you point out, space is not good.

I would be looking at the packing on the rudder posts. They are above the water line while at rest and only leak when underway. . Capt. George

I owned a 1997 31 Open and currently own a 2003 38 Open both configured with with PSS drip-less shaft seals that, after several years and many engine hours, only leaked when underway... Took a careful look at the ceramic/stainless steel faces on the PSS and cleaned with very fine Emory cloth.... Seemed to fix although I also re-adjusted the pressure on the ceramic/stainless steel face for one shaft by moving the stainless steel collar closer to the bellows per the manufacturers spec.(Requires loosening the 4 set screws on the SS collar and sliding the collar toward the shaft seal bellows to increase pressure on the ceramic/steel interface). This completely solved my problem on both boats and have not had a problem on the 38 since....M2C

Reel magic just purchased a 2003 38 open like yours.put 2 new seaboard marine water pumps on for my trip from Fort Lauderdale to New York. Port pump failed after 25 hours.. shaft broke .had to run on one for three hours. Did not lock down shut down shaft .will that situation cause an overheat on shut down engine or is the zf 280 transmission designed not to spin.bill can't log in on my email so using my wife's.

Not sure if I understand what you are saying/asking.....Assume the broken shaft was the water pump shaft and NOT the propeller shaft (surprised the water pump failed with only 25 hrs on it)..... The transmission doesn't inhibit the propeller shaft from turning when the engine is off and you are underway using the other engine.... Not sure how fast you were going...... I troll with a single engine and the other in neutral but running and haven't experienced an overheat condition.....

Yes it was water pump shaft that broke after 25 hours.i agree trolling on one is probably best done with other engine at idle so the pss gets fluid but in my situation that was impossible because of broken water pump..I wasn't thinking about the shaft spinning with no water supply at the time because I had regular stuffing boxes on my 33 open.not sure of best way to lock shaft.i imagine pss could overheat without water.bill

I ran our 3200 for two to three hours on one engine after breaking off a propeller blade on an unmarked gill net miles from Ludington on Lake Michigan. Had the boat pulled and installed a spare prop and ran the boat another several hours with no problems. That was 7 or more years ago. It did not seem to cause any heat damage to the stuffing box or tranny which was shifted to neutral for the time I ran on one engine.
