Engine will not start
#1
The starboard engine on my 2000,  3100 Open will not start. Ran fine, next time I tried to start it, won’t turn over. The mechanic spent two hours checking everything he could think of. He’s stumped. He says “something is keeping it from firing up.” Crusader 320 hp, gasoline.
Thoughts?

Probably need more information. Does the starter turn? Does it fire at all or just roll with the starter? Did your mechanic check spark, fuel pressure and plug into the diagnostic port to check for codes? I don't know that engine in particular but assuming it cranks and has spark, and no warning/diagnostic lamp maybe look at the fuel pump. A lot of MPI engines have a fuel pump relay and or an oil pressure switch that provides power to the pump when oil pressure is present.

I agree 100% with the above.  One more quick check --- can you hear the fuel pump run for a second when you
turn the key to ON ( not to START ). That will indicate fuel pressure.
Fuel pump relay failures are very common. I always carry a spare and they are cheap.
If the engine does not spin when you turn the key to START you most likely have a hydrolock and need to pull the plugs. Most likely cause is a hole in the exhaust elbow.

Agree with the above - only addition is if engine is spinning but not firing (no spark) - sounds like the ignition relay. When you turn to key to 'run' or 'on' do you get the 'system check' chirps indicating all is well?

May seem like one of those "duh" moment, but i once tripped the engine master circuit breaker by mistake when i was checking the bilge. No power, no crank.

A good mechanic once told me too start with the simple, even if it's not the most obvious.

Trace big inputs from source to end; electrical, fuel and raw water (although it doesn't seem like water is the issue here).

I’d get a new mechanic
No start is one of 4 things
1. Fuel pump not turning on when key is turned - thus usually the fuel pump relay
2. The distributor pickup coil is busted
3. The starter relay is bad
4. The started solenoid is bad
