Quick Question for my 98 31 Open, some of the VDO gagues (specifically Oil Temp and Port Temp) are a bit foggy. A couple of others have had the fog in the past but seemed to clear up. Any info on why or how to repair the problem would be appreciated.
The moisture inside the gauge as I'm sure you know is condensation. If the gauges are getting foggy, it means the seals on the gauges are leaking. When it gets warmer and the air inside the gauges heat up, the moisture is expelled and they may dry out depending on the humidity level.
The only real fix is to replace the gauges with new. I'm not sure if the gauges can be rebuilt, google VDO gauges and see what comes up.
If you are willing to remove the gauges to fix this, you could desiccate them in a sealed container full of Damp Rid. If disassembly is possible grease the seals with silicone paste, if not then see if you can apply some silicone caulk where you suspect the unit is supposed to be sealed. But buying new gauges would make more sense to me.
JMK offers some good ideas, but if you seal them with any moisture inside, the fogging is going to reappear. Once you have taken the time to remove them I would just replace them. Too much labor to try and fix them only to have the issue reappear. I for one hate having to redo a job over and over.
