4000 Express: Squishy Swim Platform
#1
The factory-optional 48" swim platform is squishy in spots and I know it needs to be re-cored. Does anyone have wisdom or experience to share?

I suspect it's going to have to be
  • pulled
  • flipped
  • opened up
  • scraped out
  • re-cored with Coosa
  • glassed over
  • bolted back on

Yep, that about covers it, other than a full replacement. And that may cost about the same money but have less effort and time.

I had $4000 set aside for the job and I know the guy is a master craftsman but I'm having trouble with the timing so I figure I'm going to try to DIY it with expanding structural foam [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

I figure I can't make it a whole lot worse than it already is. I wanted to do Sea Dek next season anyway so if it works out well, the money I save can be re-purposed for doing that this season instead!

I installed davit system and wanted to see the stringer layout.  Tiara did not have the schematics but had some old photos to share.   Just gives you an idea of how it all comes together.   You would have to access each bay.   Dissemble looks like a nightmare...I would certainly try an injectable.
In order to install the davit I cut an access hole on the underside of the platform towards the leading edge, did my install then reglass the area using the cut out as the structure.   Far better (in my opinion) than putting deck access ports on the top side.

@August Rush for the win! Thank you for these pictures. All that empty space has me thinking about fender storage but that's for another day, lol

Just curious, the 98 you bought...was it from Cleveland?

Just curious...I looked at another one in Cleveland before I ended up making a purchase and that one had a soft platform too.   They had installed several access ports which created some stress cracks in the deck and allowed for water intrusion.  Just wondering why so many of these boats have plaform issues.  The one I bought didnt but several that I looked at did.

Update: So I went with the Inject-A-Deck and it's not for the feint of heart. In the hands of a humble software developer like me, it's not as good as a traditional re-coring but it *is* good enough for me for the next few years if it holds up. As a bonus I'll be able to have custom Sea Dek installed with the money I saved. I'll definitely post pics of the Sea Dek and I'll share a terrible video I took along the way in the Inject-A-Dek journey.

Please be patient with the shaky camera in the first "scene". I'm also a terrible videographer Smile
