bildge pump
#1
i am having a problem locating where the water in my mid bildge  is coming from, driving me crazy, i have noticed my port rudder  shaft has a very slight leak, hopefully can just tighten the nut and will fix the leak, hoping at least, i do not think that is what is causing the abundance of water in the mid bildge tho, i got on my hands and knees and sucked out all the water with a shop vac, sat down there by the mid bildge with paper toweling to see where the water was coming from, it was coming from UNDER the bildge pump?? my mechanic said that is there is nothing beneath the bildge so it cant be coming from there, when the boat was on land i looked underneath boat, could find no problems, cannot figure it out, slept on the boat this weekend, the bildge pump came on 1 time all weekend, am i overreacting, is that common, a small amount of water in the mid bildge area, i would say if i had to measure i would say 1-2 inches, when i manually turn on the bildge it runs for approx 10 seconds before the water is gone, just lookin for sum advice , thank you in advance.

Presumably the water is accumulating in the keel and you have an open? If so I believe the keel is open thru to the aft steering compartment. Water can migrate forward and give the appearance it is coming up under the pump. You can look back there for water entering thru the rudder posts or it isn’t uncommon to have the exhaust hose clamps around the rubber connectors loosened up and allow water to enter while under way. There also should be a wash down pump, strainer and thru hull worth inspecting.

2” isn’t much if it accumulates over time. As the previous post mentioned, the condensate drains deposit water there. But if the pump is cycling a few times a day it warrants a little more inspection.
