3200 Open Advice/Reviews
#1
Looking at purchasing a 2006 3200 open with very low hours on it. Are their any current 3200 owners that can tell me how they like it? I have two small kids and wanted to get something big enough to take out the family for a couple nights at a time and also do a lot of fishing. How does it ride? I've heard mixed reviews on how it handles and how wet/dry it is.
Thanks,
Luke

We love our '04 3200.  We upgraded from an '08 Sea Ray Sundancer 290.  The Sea Ray worked decent with its aft cabin for weekends.  We had 2 adult couples on it regularly.  But with only a 9.5' beam, it was a little tight though.  The Open layout is ok for small kids, but its tough sleeping 2 couples.  Fishing is a no comparison... the Open is a fishing machine.  Trolling or just on the hook catching perch.  5 guys fish it easily.

My wife always says the Tiara "sashays" ... its not a speed demon.  With the diesels, it sounds school bus-esque ... but I like its ultra stable/dry ride.  I've "only" been in Erie 4'ers with it, but I was totally comfortable in it.  No way would I have taken the Sea Ray out in that.

Feel free to PM me.

We sold a 1993 370 Sea Ray express and bought a new 2004 3200. The Tiara outperforms the SR in just about every way. It's seakeeping is better due to its finer entry and flared bow. We don't run the wipers constantly. It's fairly heavy for its size at nearly 18,000 pounds loaded. Seating is more comfortable than larger SR. Bed is large and comfortable. 8.1s in this hull are great for boating on the Great Lakes. This is the first of many boats we have owned that we still enjoy after 12 years.

I own a 2007 with Cummins engines.    Like you, I have kids (3) and fish on the Gulf Coast...A LOT....out of this boat.   I admit that I don't overnight on it with all of the family, but you could do it.  (It would be tight!)

As for the handling/ride/etc., I haven't been on many similar boats to this one.  Most of what we see on the Panhandle are center console and sportfishing boats so that is all I have to compare it to.    In normal seas (2-3s offshore), I'm cruising at around 21-23 kts.....but it is a comfortable ride.....no pounding or jarring.    The wide beam makes it like a tank......you're not going to skip across the water, but you'll appreciate the weight when it gets sporty out there.   If it's smooth....I take it on up to 24-27 kts.....she'll do it.

As for the fishing.......I can't find a more versatile platform for what I do.   Trolling is very comfortable and we do a ton of bottom fishing on it.   I even have a swim platform and I have no problems with it getting in the way (glad I have it, actually).   I look at the new boats in the same size range.....and everything is outboard power.  To me, this takes up way too much fishing room off the transom and only gives you a little more cabin space.   Basically, I haven't been in a boat that I like more right now.   And I'm bummed that Tiara isn't really offering a similar boat these days to the 3200.   The 31 is a Coronet with no fishing options........maybe you can set the 36 up to fish....but that's more boat.

I'm rambling.....feel free to ask more questions via PM or email.

BPY,
Thanks so much for the info. How is the noise level while at cruise?

Not bad at all.   At least not that I notice and its less than if you have 2 or 3 outboards hanging off the transom.  If you have the engine hatch lifted slightly, you can really hear them........which tells me Tiara did a good job of reducing the noise from the engine room.

Probably the most remarkable thing about the diesels is the little amount of exhaust you actually smell.   My engines run all day as well as the generator, a lot of times at idle while hovering over a fishing spot.   I have never had anyone complain about the smell of diesel exhaust with these engines.     Which is a far cry from the old Catapillar days.

I agree with all the reviews.
I have a 2004 3200.  Gas.
Fishing machine and comfortable cruiser.
Build quality is exceptional.
Handles like a 48.  Heavy and deliberate in rough seas.
Just pushes through, however the only negative I can find is the wet ride in rough windy seas.
Windshield wipers a must.
Otherwise, it is a do it all yacht.
I fish it, cruise and entertain, and sleep multiple nights with family of 3.
