The weight of a vessel and Gross Tonnage are two different measurements and are easy to confuse.
Per Wikipedia Tonnage is a measure of the size or cargo carrying capacity of a ship. The term derives from the taxation paid on tuns or casks of wine, and was later used in reference to the weight of a ship's cargo; however, in modern maritime usage, "tonnage" specifically refers to a calculation of the volume or cargo volume of a ship. Tonnage should not be confused with Displacement which refers to the loaded or empty weight of the vessel itself.
My 36 Sovran has a weight of 23,000lbs and gross tonnage of 24. You can find the documentation data on any vessel at the following web site.
Hope this helps.
