Tiara Convertible Engine Battery Charger AC Power Issue
#1
Question
Good evening I’m new to the forum and this is my first post so please pardon if I don’t follow proper procedure. I wanted to share a troubling issue with my 2006 390 Convertible engine battery charger in hopes someone else has experience the same.  The charger and system works great when powered by AC, but unfortunately the factory hardwire from the panel is not working. I will start by saying I know my way around boats as I have owned most my life. Here is the issue is short and what I have isolated:

The AC breaker is good. It has power in/out I checked at the panel.
The neutral (white wire) and ground (green wire) going into the charger are both good. I have isolated the issue to the black lead or power wire.

My thought is somewhere there is a GFI that has popped; however I have checked every outlet and GFI and reset and they are all good.  I am unaware of an inline fuse on the AC side but think that could be an issue as well. I have checked other breakers (e.g. stove, hot water heater, cockpit freezer, etc) to make sure they are not sharing power and they all work. In fact, everything works great except the AC power to the engine charger. The house batteries are charged separately from the inverter. I even disconnected the lead line and fed another wire I knew was good and the charger came on me began to function. I don’t want to bypass the panel and retire but this is my only option at this point. Any direction or advise is welcome. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum

So you have 120 VAC at breaker but not at hot lead termination at charger? So probably a break somewhere in the circuit.

You can reach out to Tiara with your HIN and they will send you a wiring schematic. But I would be surprised to learn of an inline fuse or something that could interfere with the hot leg of the circuit. Unusual to have a wire break as described/suspected. Sometimes corrosion works it's way under the insulation, gets hot and the wire breaks internally. I would recommend probing the wire about 6 inches in from each lead. Otherwise get some marine grade wire and pull a new cable. Shouldn't be that difficult to get from charger to distribution panel. Good luck

Thank you for the post. I agree with your assessment that it is unlikely a wire break. I followed from the charger as far as I could and it is very well protected. I actually have the wiring diagram (to large to attached) and from what I can tell (I’m not an electrical expert) the neutral and ground go to a buss bar and the lead is direct to the panel.  I will try probing the wire and see if I can isolate a break. There is an option to pull a wire or jump from a nearby outlet.  I was just hoping to keep it factory. I plan on reaching out to Tiara tomorrow and see if they have seen this issue before.

Have you found all the gfci? Often there are outlets in the engine room and also under the gunwales and even inside medicine cabinets, under sinks etc.

I believe I did but wouldn't hurt to open a few more cabinets. My question on the GFI issue would be why would they wire through an outlet if it has its own breaker...nevertheless i will try  thank you
