Good morning all,
We are looking at several late 80s 36 convertibles.  The boat seems to fit our purposes.  What areas are prone to problems that I should look out for? We are new to tiaras after having ocean yachts, well crafts, and regals.

Tiara's are very well built boats, but not with out their faults. I have a 36 Open in the vintage your looking at. They share the same hull and many other features.

Known areas to look at:

Bow pulpit, check for moisture. These are bolted on, so check where they are bolted thru.

Portlights, check for moisture around them, rebed or replace as needed.

Aft deck hatches, check for moisture around hinges on both the hatch and on the deck.

These are older boats and have higher levels of moisture. But if you keep ahead of them, you'll be find.

Mine have crusaders. Around 4350 hours each. Their both having their top ends redone this winter. One motor as I had milky oil at the end of the season due to a corroded water channel on the head and the other motor as proactive maintenance. Mechanic said I caught it early and didnt appear to have done any damage. But these are older boats and will require maintenance.

Thanks for the input. I have heard the wood in the stringers was only for fiberglass layup purposes and the fiberglass is the actual strength. Any truth to this? Also, is the hull cored below the waterline or is it straight fiberglass? Thank you again.

I've read the same thing about the stringers. I will say they are very beefy compared to other boats on the same size that I've owned.

My hull is not cored below the water line, it's solid. I know this for certain from when I had my transducer installed.
