I have a 2000 3500 Open which has two electric rams, one on either side of the hatch cover. When opening, everything seems to work fine and both sides of the hatch raise in harmony and to the same opening distance with the motors stopping simultaneously. However, when closing, the port side ram lowers at a slower rate than the starboard side. The starbord side of the hatch reaches the deck faster, and when fully closed, that motor stops while the port side motor continues to lower the other side of the hatch. At this point, the port side has almost 3 inches left to go. The port side continues to close for a few seconds and when it is fully closed, its motor stops. I don't know if the ram or the electric motor is bad. Further, I don't even know which side is bad and which side is working correctly? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
With an AMP meter you could see if the slower actuator is drawing more amperage during the down cycle. This would indicate the actuator to look at further. The slower actuator is usually suspect. Not knowing your mechanical skills, you may need to contact a service technician. It could be as simple as, lubrication or as involved as replacement.
Had this trouble with my electric rams too. My first guess is the rams are not adjusted correctly. Open the hatch and block it. Then unbolt the ram that does not close all the way and rotate it IN the amount it is to long. Reconnect it and try again. Or maybe just spray some WD40. Capt. George
