Anyone have experience removing the special Tiara coupling from the prop shaft on a 3200? My mechanic is having real trouble getting it off so we can replace the PSS shaft seal. Have tried all the usual approaches, i.e heat, hydrauic puller etc.
I did see a coupling on a Cabo that had a large bolt in the center of the prop shaft holding the coupling to the shaft on the engine end. This to prevent the shaft from pulling out of the stuffing box in a hard grounding. If the shaft pulls out you have a 1-1/2" hole allowing water to fill the engine room ( this did happen to a friend).
Usually we separate the coupling, insert a large nut or socket between the halves, bolt them back together and tighten the bolts. Maybe then use some heat. Good luck. Capt. George
We have removed this coupling with great success. YMMV. Here is what we did. Remove bolts that hold coupling onto transmission. Loosen all clamps, set screws associated with the PSS so you can slid the shaft, with coupling, rearward. Remove the large nut that hold the coupling on the shaft, coupling is tapered as well as the shaft on this end as well. Once nut is removed, reattach all the bolts from the coupling to the transmission and tighten them down, tight. We then used a slide hammer that attached to the prop threads and slammed the slide hammer until you get the shaft to detach from the coupling. Remove bolts from coupling and transmission and the coupling will pull off the end of the shaft.
Kind of a pain in the butt but I had to replace both my PSS seals earlier this year and that is how it was done. I was there when my mechanic did it and I remember he had a turned down socket so it would fit in the coupling to remove that large nut. He was familiar with this type of coupling so had all the tools ready to go and it went surprisingly well.
Have just noticed that when underway the aft bilge pump is running constantly. I believe that the shaft seal or stuffing box on the prop shaft(s) are the culprit. I can stop and the mid bilge takes up the slack and empties the bilge. No noticeable leakage at rest. 2005 Tiara 32 open. access looks like a bear. Anyone do this themselves?
You need to verify that the shaft seal is what is leaking. Could be coming from engine, rudder seals who knows. Verify where the leak is first then we can go from there.
