Sealand Head Pump
#1
I have a  2002 4100 Open and the Sealand head pump has an intermittent issue.  It became worse after a cruise with kids and I'm not sure if it's related.

Sporadically the pump used to come on for 2-3 seconds throughout the day.  After the kid trip, it comes on for several minutes and periodically won't shut off.  I have been flushing the head to see if it would reset and sometimes it works and other times I shut it off at the panel.  After several minutes off, I turn it back on and it stops running.

Is this a problem with the pump, accumulator, lines or???  Before I replace everything, I would like to know if you folks have had this issue and what you did to resolve it.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Assume you have a vac-u-flush system on your boat. If so I suspect the "duckbill valves" are leaking causing a vacuum leak... I've attached a diagram to show where they are.. The duckbills get clogged/old after several years and no longer seal as intended.. As a result they leak preventing the system from holding a vacuum.. Replace is my suggestion... M2C

That is the signal that you have a leak in the system.  Probably related to age of unit.  Take the kids off the hook.  Not sure how to diagnose.  YouTube?

Buy the replacement duckbill kit along with the new silent diaphragm and replace everything. Once you pull the pump apart you will immediately know if it was the kids fault or just old duck bills. If something is stuck in the duck bills it was the kids (or a parent) if not it was age.

Thanks for the advice. I will tear in down next week and start with the duck bills.

ReelMagic, once again thank you!
I found the duckbills and seals at Amazon and they'll be here Wednesday.

I had same issue and after replacing duckbills and the discharge hose it still kept running every 20-30 minutes with no lose of water in the bowl. Long story short ended up being the orings in the flush pedal ball shaft.

Reeltimebrad, its' still running like yours did. Are you referring to the seals as listed in this attachment item #4? [Only registered and activated users can see links Click here to register]

Yes it's item #8 a brass shaft attached to the flush ball with two small orings. I would plan on replacing the shaft and orings as mine had some corrosion and pitting. Use silicone or dielectric grease during reassembly.

Thank you for the information. I'll order the part tomorrow and hope this solves the leak.
