The information they gave you is correct regarding changing over to SLA's.  If you elect to consider AGM, you'll need to do more research.  I think you'll find that the charge rate on most AGM's is not compatible with that Charger.  I recently upgraded to Lifeline AGM's this past fall (97 3100 Open) and upgraded the charger as well (new Charles charger with three settings:  LA, Gel, AGM).  If you have an adjustable voltage regulator, that will need to be checked as well with a switch to AGM's.   Hope this helps...just do your homework....
