I would just use the parallel switch instead of the interconnect. But I do agree that by not addressing the root cause, it has the potential to worsen.

After all that has been said and what you have done I'm starting to suspect the starter itself. It may need to be bench tested to determine if it requires a rebuild...Just a thought.
